Chemical characterization of organic compounds involved in iodine-initiated new particle formation from coastal macroalgal emission

Abstract. Iodine-initiated new particle formation (I-NPF) has long been recognized in coastal hotspot regions. However, no prior work studied the exact chemical composition of organic compounds and their role I-NPF. Here we present an important complementary study to ongoing laboratory field research on iodine nucleation atmosphere. Oxidation NPF experiments with vapor emissions from real-world macroalgae were simulated a bag reactor. On basis comprehensive mass spectrometry measurements, reported for first time variety volatile precursors oxidation products gas phases such highly complex system. Organic overwhelmingly dominated over growth initiated by species. The identity transformation mechanisms proposed this provide more complete story low-tide macroalgal emission.
